Lori Brand
Lori’s love of music, from classical to folk, began at an early age. Learning piano and music theory was a given in her highly musical family, and by 10 years old, she was already performing in small recitals.
While most children were content to play one instrument, Lori loved the sounds of woodwinds and strings and was eager to master them. Lori plays the bassoon, clarinet, flute, recorder and guitar. Singing was always part of her life, and she began formal study in her teens. She performed in choruses, cabarets and musicals, and played the leading role of Maria in a New York production of West Side Story.
Lori went on to major in music in college, in her earlier years studying choral conducting at the Mannes College of Music. With bassoon as her instrument, Lori completed her Bachelor of Science and Master of Music degrees from Mannes. She later received a Master of Arts degree in Music Education from New York University.
Lori’s professional teaching career began as the middle school music teacher at Horace Mann School, teaching general music and chorus, and was the musical director of the yearly musical. She then joined the faculty of LaGuardia High School for Music and Art and Performing Arts in New York City, where she taught theory, music history, bassoon, flute and all of the woodwinds as well as directed the bands. She later joined the faculty of the distinguished private school, Saint Ann’s, in Brooklyn Heights, New York, where she taught music history, clarinet, flute, bassoon, oboe, chamber music, and conducted the orchestra and wind ensemble.
Lori’s connection to music was enhanced by her marriage to the late, acclaimed concert pianist, Natan Brand. Music filled their home, where they raised two sons, Jesse Brand, a neuropsychologist and singer-songwriter, and Ari Brand, an actor and musician.
Lori currently teaches privately and is a professional free-lance bassoonist in New York City. She is the principal bassoonist in two local orchestras and a founding member of the woodwind quintet L’Amore della Musica.
Lori loves to play music. She takes great pleasure in sharing her enthusiasm with her students, who have become her biggest fans.
Lori enjoys playing numerous instruments, including bassoon, piano, guitar, recorder, and flute. She emphasizes the importance of both positive feedback and gentle attention to mistakes. As principal bassoonist in several New York City orchestras, Lori’s experiences with both practice and performance have taught her patience, persistence, and composure. It is these virtues that she seeks to pass on to her students. As a master bassoonist, Lori teaches all levels of bassoon for any age group. In addition to the bassoon, Lori is available for early, middle, late childhood, adult beginner, and adult intermediate instruction in piano and flute. Lessons can be 30, 45 or 60 minutes long. Contact Lori to set up an appointment or to find out more about lessons.
